The Government of Romania has approved the development of a new 10,100-seat stadium for Liga III football club Corvinul Hunedoara.
The new Complexului Sportiv Michael Klein will be built on the site of the existing Stadionul Michael Klein, which has a capacity of 16,500 and opened in 1960.
The new project, which has a budget of 313.78m lei (£56.17m/€64.04m/$68m), is projected to take 28 months to complete.
Along with the stadium itself, the complex will also feature a new exterior design, creating a promenade and event areas, as well as a 435-space car park.
Dan Bobouţanu, Mayor of the Transylvanian city of Hunedoara, said, according to Romanian newspaper ProSport: “I am glad that it was also understood at the level of the decision-making that Hunedoara deserves a new stadium.
“We have a tradition in football, and a new stadium will help us have a beautiful future. It will be a stadium of the entire county, which will also be able to host cultural events, a stadium that will, at times, attract the public from a radius of at least 100 kilometres.
“If the tender procedures start in the spring of next year and take place without major delays, we have reason to hope that the works will be able to start in the last part of 2023.”
The news comes after it was revealed in October that Liga I club Farul Constanța is set to receive a new 18,000-seat stadium backed by the Romanian Government and named in honour of arguably the country’s greatest player of all time, Gheorghe Hagi.
