Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has spoken of his wish to build a new stadium in the US state that would serve as the home of the Washington Redskins NFL American football franchise.
The team currently plays at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, but its headquarters and training facility are based in Virginia.
McAuliffe has talked up the prospect of the Redksins moving to Virginia for some time and has previously claimed that the state and the team had been in “serious” negotiations regarding a stadium deal.
Yesterday (Wednesday), at the team’s annual pre-season lunch, McAuliffe took the opportunity to make a further case for the move. “I want to thank the Redskins for being such a great economic driver,” McAuliffe said, according to the Associated Press news agency.
“We have your headquarters. We have your training facility. What else could there possibly be? Let me say this, Dan (Snyder, Redskins owner): Think about Virginia.”
The Redskins’ FedEx Field lease expires in 2026.
