Indian cricket ground to undergo renovation

The Indira Priyadarshini Stadium, which is located in the Indian city of Visakhapatnam, is to undergo renovation work amounting to Rs125m (£1.4m/€1.7m/$1.9m).

The New Indian Express newspaper reported that the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation would develop a new synthetic track at the ground, which hosts cricket matches.

Other work to be carried out at the ground will include the construction of a gym and a waiting hall.

The stadium is named after Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi, who served as Prime Minister of India between 1980 and 1984.

The ground has hosted a number of one-day international cricket matches, most recently in 2001. The venue has been overlooked for further games following the construction of the ACA-VDCA stadium in the city in 2003.

It is hoped that the proposed renovation of Indira Priyadarshini Stadium will make it a more attractive prospect for hosting future international matches.
