Test shows quicker internet speeds at NFL grounds

Speedtest by Ookla, a global provider of internet testing and metrics, has carried out an experiment to determine the average upload and download speeds at four leading NFL American football stadia.

On August 25, Speedtest flew a large banner displaying the ‘Take a Speedtest’ message over CenturyLink Field during the Seattle Seahawks' pre-season game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Speedtest collected results from the four main mobile phone carriers in the US – AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless.

The test covered CenturyLink Field, as well as Levi’s Stadium, AT&T Stadium and Bank of America Stadium, the homes of the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys and Carolina Panthers respectively.

Speedtest found that internet speed is generally improving in stadia. At CenturyLink Field, T-Mobile had the highest average download and upload speed (36.71mbps and 17.52mbps respectively) of the four carriers.

AT&T came out on top for downloads at Levi’s Stadium, with Verizon leading the way with average upload speeds. Verizon recorded the highest average download speeds at AT&T Stadium, with AT&T edging ahead on upload speeds at its self-titled stadium. At Bank of America Stadium, AT&T also led the way with both download and upload speeds.

Speedtest cited increased investment in technological infrastructure as one of the main reasons for the improvements. The company also pointed to the fact that mobile carriers are investing in their own networks in and around stadia as key.

Speedtest is encouraging sports fans to share their own internet speeds on social media through the #CrowdSpeed hashtag.
