Goodell cools talk of Vegas move for Raiders

Roger Goodell, the commissioner of the National Football League, has said that the Oakland Raiders’ proposed relocation to Las Vegas is still some way off.

Last week, the team’s plans to move from California to Nevada were given a boost when the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee (SNTIC) voted unanimously in favour of recommending $750m (£579m/€671m) in public funding for a new stadium in Las Vegas.

The SNTIC recommended that the 65,000-seat stadium be partially funded by an increase in hotel taxes in the Las Vegas area. The proposal still requires approval from Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, but last week’s development was viewed as significant.

Any relocation of the Raiders, however, must require the backing of 24 of the NFL’s 32 team owners, and Goodell believes such a consensus is not yet achievable.

“There’s still a lot that has to happen before we would get to that stage,” Goodell said. “Recognising that they came out of committee with a bill, but there’s still a lot of work to be done to improve that recommendation.”
