Completion date of Atlético stadium remains up in the air

Spanish LaLiga football club Atlético Madrid may not be able to move into its new stadium as planned next year.

The 2016-17 season is scheduled to be Atlético’s last at its current home, Vicente Calderón Stadium, before it moves to the revamped Estadio La Peineta.

The former athletics stadium is currently undergoing reconstruction and is due to open in time for the 2017-18 LaLiga campaign.

However, Madrid Council has been unable to guarantee a completion date, with concerns having been raised over the stadium’s accessibility.

Jose Manuel Calvo, the council’s delegate for sustainable urban development, told Spanish newspaper Marca: “Neither the council nor the club can ensure the completion time because the final approval of that specific modification depends on the Comunidad de Madriod and also any further issues raised over the stadium.”
