Kings introduce transgender-friendly restrooms

LGBTQ activists have praised the owners of the Sacramento Kings’ new arena after it announced that the Golden 1 Center will feature transgender-friendly restrooms.

The NBA basketball team’s arena includes 23 single-occupancy restrooms that have been labelled “all gender”. A team spokesman said fans may use whichever of the multi-occupancy restrooms correlates to their gender identity.

A spokesman for Equality California, a transgender-rights group, told the Sacramento Bee news website that Golden 1 could be the world’s first sports arena to offer all-gender restrooms.

“The Sacramento Kings are leading not only the NBA, but sports worldwide in building the first arena to ensure transgender fans are fully respected and welcomed,” said Rick Zbur, executive director of Equality California.

Kings chairman Vivek Ranadive said the club “wanted to ensure the very best fan experience for everyone regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity”.
