Stadium contractors fined for reneging on local worker promise

Contractors tasked with building a new arena for the Detroit Red Wings North American NHL ice hockey team have been fined $675,000 (£552,000/€618,000) after failing to recruit the majority of its workforce from the city.

Local newspaper the Detroit News said that Olympia Development of Michigan had agreed to hire at least 51 per cent of its team from Detroit.

However, according to information released by the city yesterday (Tuesday), only 41 per cent of workers are Detroiters. The data also shows that the figure is decreasing.

The $675,000 has been put towards workforce training, according to city officials.

Construction work at Little Caesars Arena began in 2015, with the development expected to be completed in time for the 2017-18 NHL season. The 20,000-capacity arena will also host entertainment shows, concerts and community events.
