Renovation work on Derry stadium set to begin imminently

Redevelopment work at the Brandywell Stadium in Derry, Northern Ireland will begin imminently, according to the local council.

Derry City and Strabane District Council said in a statement that it “hopes to be in a position to announce the award of contract for the Brandywell regeneration project within the next two weeks.”

A provisional letter of intent has been issued to a preferred contractor for the project, the council confirmed. Karen McFarland, director of health and communities with the council, said that it would be able to announce the details of a contract and confirm a commencement date following the completion of the necessary standstill period, and providing no challenges arise during this period.

“Derry City and Strabane District Council is fully committed to this significant redevelopment project,” McFarland said. “It is a significant investment of around £6m (€6.7m/$7.3m) that will improve the prospects and quality of life of citizens and have a positive impact on the regeneration of the Brandywell and wider area.”

The renovation of Brandywell Stadium is central to the project, with the ground set to benefit from a new stand, pitch and changing rooms.

McFarland added that the council would continue to engage with stadium tenants, which include football club Derry City and the greyhound racing organisers, over the project's development.
