Work begins on $70m Texas high school sports stadium

The McKinney Independent School District (ISD) in Texas has broken ground on a new $69.9m (€65.2m/£55.4m) stadium that will be one of the most expensive high school sports facilities in the US.

Work on the 55-acre facility began a few months ago after voters approved the project as part of a $220m bond package. The 12,000-capacity stadium and event centre is scheduled for completion in early 2018.

The McKinney ISD, located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, operates 20 elementary schools, five middle schools, three high schools, four alternative schools, and one early childhood education center.

However, while the stadium has been approved, it has been the subject of controversy in the local area due to rising costs. The budget is now set at $7.1m more than the initial estimate, although the project manager said this would be made up by tapping into un-designated 2011 and 2016 bond funds.

Superintendent Rick McDaniel told The Dallas Morning News newspaper: “It’s a great day for McKinney. It’s going to be exactly what we promised our voters.”
