Christchurch mayor voices concerns over cost of stadium repairs

A proposed restoration project at legendary cricket and rugby venue Lancaster Park is under threat after Christchurch mayor Lianne Dalziel said the plans are too expensive.

The New Zealand venue was badly damaged during the February 2011 earthquake and has not been used since.

Although Christchurch City Council had planned to carry out restoration work on the stadium, according to Radio NZ, Dalziel has now said a report into the project places the total cost at between NZ$250m (€167.4m/US$180.3m/£142.8m) and NZ$270m.

However, the mayor said that no official decision has been made on the project, with the council due to discuss the report next week. Lancaster Park was included in Christchurch City Council’s NZ$635m insurance settlement last year.

In 2012, plans were also drawn up for the construction of a new multi-purpose sports facility at a cost of NZ$235m. The project was due for completion next year, but the Council has since extended this to 2021.
