All 800 AFL players have offered to forego their share of money generated by the Aussie rules football league at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium until 2023.
The Herald Sun newspaper reports that the offer, made last month, was made in the hope of ending a deadlock over pay demands. However, no new discussions are scheduled, with the AFL Commission due to meet today (Tuesday).
In addition to Etihad Stadium revenue, the AFL Players’ Association removed pokies riches, supporter bequests and government grants from a six-year pay proposal presented to the league at the start of November. Players are hoping to secure a fixed percentage of overall revenue, rather than an annual amount decided by the league.
The AFL took ownership of the Etihad, also known as the Docklands Stadium, in October via a deal worth A$200m (€141.1m/US$149.8m/£118.1m), with plans to pay off the debt quickly.
The players’ concession over stadium gains does not include revenue or gate receipts from AFL tenant clubs, but money from other events such as music concerts and cricket matches will be excluded.
