Minnesota United breaks ground on new stadium

Major League Soccer expansion franchise Minnesota United yesterday (Monday) broke ground on its new home stadium, which is due to be completed during the 2018 season.

The club last week released renderings of the stadium, which will have an initial capacity of 19,916 before expanding to about 25,000.

The stadium has been designed to harness a strong atmosphere, with seats ranging from 15 feet away from the pitch to a maximum of 145 feet. A 360-degree canopy will also overhang the bowl, covering 80 to 85 per cent of the seats.

The stadium will also feature a “flow” design concept with LED lighting throughout, while there will be a 1,600-square-foot retail store and a distributed antenna system for enhanced cell phone coverage.

“That’s an experience you really want to create,” club president Nick Rogers said. “I’ve talked to people in soccer and the NBA who have looked at [stadia like Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City] and what they’ve done from a premium hospitality standpoint.

“We’re going to take that to another level. We’ll have a very impactful visual component as well as a great place to watch and play the game.”

Minnesota United was awarded an MLS franchise in 2015 and will enter the league next year. The team will play at TCF Bank Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota until the new facility is ready.
