The San Diego Chargers NFL American football franchise has been offered a lease of just $1 per year to stay at its current Qualcomm Stadium home.
According to NBC San Diego, the proposal was made by four members of San Diego’s City Council who are keen for the franchise to stay in the Californian city and begin talks over a new stadium. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and the 31 other NFL owners have also been made aware of the offer.
The immediate future of the Chargers remains unclear, with the franchise having until the January 15 deadline to exercise an option to move to Los Angeles and join the Rams, which recently relocated from St. Louis, at a new stadium that is set to open in Inglewood in 2019.
In contrast, six weeks ago a ballot measure for a new downtown stadium in the Chargers’ current home city was soundly defeated.
The 70,000-seat Qualcomm Stadium, originally the San Diego Stadium, opened in 1967.
