Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen Arena to be fitted with Philips Lighting system

The Philips Lighting division of Dutch technology company Philips will install its LED pitch lighting at the Volkswagen Arena, home of German Bundesliga football club VfL Wolfsburg, in the coming weeks.

Wolfsburg will become the first German team to adopt the energy-efficient lighting system at its home stadium. The system will be fitted during German football’s winter break and will be used for the first time during the home game against Hamburg on January 21.

The lighting helps elevate the stadium experience by synchronising the arena’s video screens and perimeter message displays, creating what Philips describes as “spectacular light effects”. Philips’ lighting can also be switched on immediately, with no warm-up phase required.

The Volkswagen Arena will also be the first German venue to feature movable spotlights through the Philips LED ArenaVision system. It is hoped these spotlights will provide stadia with greater versatility when it comes to hosting other events such as concerts. The lighting can also be used to illuminate specific areas of the pitch for maintenance or training purposes.

“Together with VfL Wolfsburg, we aim to create the ultimate entertainment experience in the stadium, allowing fans to enjoy the match to the fullest – from arrival at the venue to the final whistle,” Roger Karner, managing director of Philips Lighting DACH, said. “The LED lighting technology meets the strict Uefa and Bundesliga standards for international TV broadcasters, enabling cameras to capture the smallest details and slightest movements of the players on camera.”

Seventy per cent of English Premier League clubs currently use Philips Lighting for their pitch lighting. Philips Lighting is also responsible for providing pitch lighting for major sporting events at over 65 per cent of all sports stadia.
