Headlingley wins council approval for £39m redevelopment

Leeds City Council has voted to approve plans for a £39m (€44.6m/$47.5m) redevelopment of Headlingley cricket and rugby stadium in the English city.

The plans include construction of a new south stand on the rugby ground, as well as a new joint stand that will overlooks the rugby pitch and cricket ground and be used by fans of both sports.

In its ruling, the local council said the project would “bring significant economic benefits to the city”, adding that the plans have now been sent to the authority’s chief planning officer for final sign-off.

However, despite this approval, it remains unclear as to how the project will be funded.

Yorkshire County Cricket Club and rugby league’s Leeds Rhinos, two of the teams that play at Headlingley, had proposed selling land for housing development to help fund work. However, the two clubs dropped the proposal after what the BBC described as “complex planning matters” delayed the renovation scheme.
