Greenland set for new indoor football stadium

Danish architect Bjarke Ingels has been tasked with building a new indoor football stadium in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.

Ingels, whose innovative projects both in Denmark and further afield have earned widespread recognition, hopes the stadium will breathe new life into Nuuk.

According to Danish newspaper the Copenhagen Post, the stadium will feature massive glass walls, providing spectators with a view of the nearby fjord. The stadium would host other events as well as football matches.

“The thought is simply to make this place a new commercial and cultural centre in Nuuk,” Ingles told Kalaallit Nunaata Radioa, the national public broadcasting corporation of Greenland.

“This location is very similar with the one we know from the Sydney Opera House, where (fellow Dane) Jørn Utzon not only put the city on the map, but all of Australia.”

Ingels has studied Nuuk’s landscape to allow the stadium to fit into the city’s natural surroundings. No timescale has been given for the project.
