St Louis stadium plan to be put to April vote

The US city of St Louis has moved a step closer to hosting a Major League Soccer expansion franchise after the final financing bill was passed to put a stadium-funding proposal up for an April vote.

The financing bill was passed by the Board of Aldermen and citizens will now on vote on whether or not the stadium project should proceed on April 4.

The SC STL investment group is leading the campaign to take MLS to St Louis and has plans to build a new multi-purpose stadium in the downtown area of the city.

“This is fantastic news for St Louis,” Paul Edgerly, chairman of SC STL, said. “The Board of Aldermen worked overtime these past few weeks as well as today (Friday) to reach a deal that is excellent for the city as well as for our bid.

“We appreciate their diligence and vision, and now St Louis needs only a ‘yes’ vote in April to see the stadium and Major League Soccer both become reality.”

SC STL vice-chair Jim Kavanaugh said the stadium project would produce more than 400 construction jobs, 450 permanent jobs and $17m (£13.6m/€16m) in net tax revenue.

SC STL is one of 12 groups seeking to acquire an MLS franchise as the league looks to expand to 28 clubs.
