Cubs to install stadium Wi-Fi with Extreme Networks

The Major League Baseball team and World Series champions, the Chicago Cubs, have selected Extreme Networks and its partner technology solutions provider PCM Inc. to deploy a high-density Wi-Fi system throughout Wrigley Field.

The Cubs’ home stadium and the adjacent entertainment park that is under construction will undergo a Wi-Fi upgrade as part of the 1060 project, a five-year, $750m (£600m/€704m) renovation and expansion of Wrigley Field.

It will eventually include a hotel, the finished entertainment park, a retail and office complex, and other additions in and around the stadium.

The Cubs have already equipped its new 30,000-square foot clubhouse with the Wi-Fi service.

The larger ballpark and 50,000-square foot adjacent entertainment venue should be up and running with the network by the start of the 2018 season, the Chicago Business Journal reports.

Following completion, Extreme will have deployed over 1,000 access points across Wrigley Field and the surrounding area.

Extreme and PCM have a relationship with the National Football league, previously providing Wi-Fi installations for Gillette Stadium, home to recently-crowned Super Bowl champion, the New England Patriots, and M&T Stadium, home to the Baltimore Ravens, among others.

Stephen Moss, senior vice-president of managed technologies at PCM, said of the deal with the Cubs: “Since 2013, we’ve worked closely with Extreme to deliver the ultimate in-stadium Wi-Fi experience, and we look forward to implementing at Wrigley Field to support players, coaches, staff and fans.”
