DC United sets groundbreaking date for Audi Field

North American Major League Soccer (MLS) club DC United is free to break ground on its new stadium later this month after it received final approval.

Two months after giving conditional support, the five-member DC Zoning Commission was unanimous in approving the 14-acre project at Buzzard Point in Southwest.

DC United will stage a ceremony to mark the occasion on February 24, with MLS commissioner Don Garber and Washington D.C. Mayor Murial Bowser both expected to attend, alongside various United officials.

Confirmation of the ceremony comes after the club this week announced German automotive manufacturer Audi as the naming rights partner for the new venue.

The newly named, 20,000-capacity Audi Field is scheduled to open in 2018.

The city has agreed to cover $150m (£120m/€141m) in land acquisition and infrastructure costs, while The MLS team itself will spend up to $200m.
