San Diego group releases renderings for proposed MLS stadium

A group aiming to establish a Major League Soccer franchise in San Diego has unveiled its full plan for a new stadium on the plot of land on which Qualcomm Stadium currently sits.

The group, which submitted its formal application for an MLS expansion franchise last month, has now revealed new renderings of the proposed 30,000-capacity stadium.

The facility would be built on the site of Qualcomm Stadium, which had served as the home of the Chargers NFL American football team until the franchise relocated to Los Angeles recently.

Qualcomm Stadium is now without a major-league tenant and the group aiming to take MLS to San Diego has proposed the demolition of the 70,000-seat stadium. The group’s plans do, however, allow for the construction of a new NFL stadium should the league opt to return to San Diego in the future.

The new stadium would serve as the home of the MLS team, as well as San Diego State University’s American football team. The site would also include 55 acres of public park space, an entertainment district and student housing.

The stadium is expected to cost about $200m, while the overall site proposal is estimated to cost $2.5bn and would be completed over a 15 to 20-year period. The bid group has proposed that the cost of the stadium be split between itself and San Diego State, with the facility to eventually be gifted to the university.

A petition campaign is set to begin next month and the group would require 120,000 signatures from San Diego residents by the end of April to indicate public support for the development.
