League of Legends World Championship final heads to Shanghai

Shanghai Stadium has been awarded hosting rights to the 2020 League of Legends World Championship final, one of the biggest events on the esports calendar.

Next year’s final at the 56,000-seat stadium will mark the 10th edition of the event, which this year was held at Paris’ AccorHotels Arena.

Shanghai Stadium primarily serves as the home of Chinese Super League football club Shanghai SIPG. The stadium opened in 1999 and staged football matches during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The League of Legends World Championship serves as the culmination of the competitive LoL season and is contested by the top teams in the world. Shanghai previously hosted the 2017 World Championship semi-finals.

The final has previously been held at The Incheon Munhak Stadium in South Korea, Beijing National Stadium and New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Shanghai is also the headquarters of China’s League of Legends Pro League.
