The Oakland Athletics will play at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento for the 2025-2027 Major League Baseball seasons prior to the team’s planned move to Las Vegas in 2028.

The move brings an end to the A’s 57-year run at the Oakland Coliseum. Sutter Health Park is in the city of West Sacramento, across the Tower Bridge just west of the State Capitol, around an hour-and-a-quarter drive from Oakland.

“We explored several locations for a temporary home, including the Oakland Coliseum,” said team owner and managing partner John Fisher in a statement.

“Even with the long-standing relationship and good intentions on all sides in the negotiations with Oakland, the conditions to achieve an agreement seemed out of reach.

“We understand the disappointment this news brings to our fans, as this season marks our final one in Oakland. Throughout this season, we will honour and celebrate our time in Oakland, and will share additional details soon.

“We extend our appreciation to the Kings and the City of West Sacramento, and look forward to making Sutter Health Park our home until our new ballpark opens in Las Vegas.”

Sutter Health Park is home to Minor League Baseball team the Sacramento River Cats. The announcement was made jointly with basketball team the Sacramento Kings which is the majority owner of the River Cats.

West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero said it was an “incredible” day for the city.

Oakland’s government reportedly offered the A’s a five-year, $97m (£76m/€89m) extension to stay in the city but with a chance to opt-out after three years.

However, the plan was said to be contingent on Major League Baseball committing to giving the city an expansion team. It would have also required the A’s to take on field conversion costs and sell its stake in the Coliseum to a local developer.

The A’s are planning to build a 33,000-capacity stadium in Las Vegas as the new home which is set to cost around $1.5bn.
