SC Freiburg offers new stadium tickets for vaccination first-timers

SC Freiburg has launched a campaign offering free tickets to a German Bundesliga football game at its new stadium to people who receive their first COVID-19 vaccination at an upcoming clinic.

The SC-Impftickets campaign is being run in association with Freiburg Wirtschaft Touristik und Messe (FWTM) and the Freiburg University Clinic. Anyone who receives their first vaccination from Friday to Sunday at the Freiburger Messe site has the chance to receive one of a total of 1,100 free tickets for a selected Bundesliga home game at the new SC-Stadion.

SC Freiburg board member Oliver Leki said: “Vaccinations are the decisive step in combating the corona pandemic and therefore getting back to normal. With our campaign SC-Impftickets we want to make a contribution.”

Freiburg confirmed last week that the club would play its first three Bundesliga home games of the 2021-22 season in the Dreisamstadion amid delays in delivering its new home. Freiburg in May said it was hoping to move into its new stadium in time for the 2021-22 season but admitted that the COVID-19 pandemic had pushed back the delivery date.

Freiburg has played at the 24,000-seat Dreisamstadion since 1954 but is set to move to the new SC-Stadion (pictured), which will have a capacity of 34,000. Freiburg had originally hoped to move to its new ground during the 2020-21 season but this has not been possible.

Freiburg said in its statement last week: “Despite the restrictions caused by the corona pandemic and the delays that have accrued in the course of the project so far, especially in the areas of electrical, media and data technology, SC Freiburg has made every effort to play its first home game of the 2021-22 season (against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, August 21, 3:30pm) in the new stadium. However, despite all efforts, the problems that arise can no longer be fully compensated for.”

Freiburg said it now intends to open SC-Stadion with the Bundesliga game against RB Leipzig on the weekend of October 15-17, adding that it plans to schedule a test event for the preceding international break.

In addition to the Dortmund game, Freiburg will also take on FC Köln and FC Augsburg at the Dreisamstadion on September 11 and September 26, respectively.
