Liga MX football club Querétaro will open a pet-friendly section at the Estadio Corregidora when it hosts Monterrey today (Tuesday).
Querétaro has teamed up with Mars Pet Nutrition Mexico, a pet food manufacturer, on the initiative, which will enable fans to take their dogs to the match.
A total of 16 spaces will be provided for pets, with each space able to accommodate up to four people and two medium-sized pets. An area of a stand at the 34,000-capacity Estadio Corregidora has been modified so it is pet-friendly.
Francisco Ríos, director of corporate affairs at Mars Pet Nutrition Mexico, told ESPN: “What we did here is that we modified a part of the stalls and put in specific spaces for dogs. It is an area that will be open at all games.”
Ríos added: “We call them boxes, they are ‘corraletas’ where it is a safe space for your pet to enjoy the match. It is acclimatised and we will lower the decibels. Pets will have a special entrance, a rest area and qualified personnel.”
Ríos said that Mars Pet Nutrition Mexico toured a number of stadiums before deciding on the Estadio Corregidora. Querétaro is set to become the first football team in the world to implement a permanent pet-friendly space at its stadium.
Querétaro promotes a pet adoption service on its home shirts and the club has visited animal shelters through its partnership with Mars Pet Nutrition Mexico.
