League of Ireland Premier Division football club Derry City has received planning approval for a redevelopment of Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium that will see the facility’s capacity almost double in size.
Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Committee has unanimously approved the plans, which are anchored by the partial demolition of the Southend Stand and the development of a safe standing covered terrace at the Brandywell Road end of the ground.
First opened in 1928, the stadium’s redevelopment has been planned to meet a significant increase in demand for season tickets. It is expected to increase capacity at the stadium by around 2,940, boosting the current figure of around 3,700 to 6,640.
The plans also include the improvement of male and female toilet facilities, two sets of turnstiles and gates and all associated site works. The scheme represents the latest phase in the development of the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium, and the work is being funded and managed by Derry City FC, the League of Ireland’s only participant from Northern Ireland, with approval and support from stadium owners Derry City and Strabane District Council.
Chair of the Planning Committee, Councillor Sean Mooney, said: “This is very welcome news for football fans, as it will significantly enhance the visitor experience at the stadium.
“I am delighted to see these plans progressing well, I want to acknowledge the work of the various teams within Council who have been working closely with Derry City FC and the local community to progress the project. It will be fantastic for the club and a great resource for the local sporting community, and I look forward to seeing the work commence on site.”
A public information day was held on May 31 for residents in the area to view the plans and discuss proposals with Council officers and Derry City FC.
The Council, which owns the stadium, said it will continue to work with the club so that all other necessary statutory approvals and agreements are in place to facilitate the earliest possible commencement of works on site.
