German Bundesliga football club Borussia Dortmund has announced a deal with energy company RWE, which will introduce a “sustainable energy optimisation concept” at Signal Iduna Park.
The six-year deal names RWE as a premium and sustainability partner of Dortmund. A key aspect of the deal will be the expansion of the photovoltaic system on the roof of Signal Iduna Park.
The system will feature over 9,500 new solar modules and deliver an output of more than 4.2 megawatts at its peak, making it the largest system of its kind on a stadium roof in Germany.
RWE will also facilitate climate-friendly electricity with the introduction of a battery storage system at Signal Iduna Park. Dortmund said that the green electricity generated annually on the roof will more than cover the club’s home matches over a 12-month period.
Back in April, RWE and Dortmund fitted a new PV system with more than 200 solar modules on the roof of the FanWelt store next to the stadium. The new system will help the club further reduce its energy costs by generating more of its own electricity, and further energy projects are planned over the course of the six-year deal.
Dortmund chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke said: “We are delighted to welcome RWE as a new partner at our side. This collaboration is an important step for us to further advance our sustainable development with future-oriented projects. Together we want to make our contribution to climate protection and promote innovative energy solutions. Borussia Dortmund and RWE share the same vision of a responsible and sustainable future.”
RWE chief executive Markus Krebber added: “We are really looking forward to working with BVB, a club from this region and with international appeal. Together we want to make Germany’s largest football stadium climate-friendly by expanding the solar energy on the roof and using it efficiently.”
