Strabag wins contract for new Slovakian national football stadium

Strabag has won a €50m (£42m/$56m) contract to build Slovakia’s new national football stadium.

The 22,000-seat venue will be built in Bratislava on the site of the demolished Tehelne Pole Stadium in the city’s Pasienky district, about 5km north-east of the city centre.

The stadium, which is expected to open in 2018, is likely to be given ‘category four’ status by Uefa, football’s European governing body, allowing it to host international matches.

It will also serve as the home ground of leading Slovakian football club Slovan Bratislava and will act as a multi-purpose venue for other sports and events.

Expo Line has designed the stadium, while NFS is funding the project, according to the EurobuildCEE website.

“The national football stadium will give Slovakian football a modern sporting venue,” Strabag chief executive Thomas Birtel said.

“We look forward to being able to apply our knowhow here in the construction of a stadium and sports facilities.”

The old stadium on the same site was flattened in late 2013, but red tape from the local authority has delayed construction work until now.
