Coritiba stadium construction work delayed

Coritiba stadium construction work delayed

The start of construction work on a new football stadium for Brazilian club Coritiba has been delayed after a board vote to approve the project was postponed until November.

Workers were originally expected to break ground on the project on October 12, marking the 107-year anniversary of the club.

The board has requested another month to review the economic viability of the project after companies involved in the development requested further information.

In spite of the delay, Coritiba vice-president Alceni Guerra insisted to the Tribuna PR newspaper that the project is still likely to go ahead.

“We need a modern venue to attract partners and the public,” he said. “I'm realistic. I think there is a good chance of supporting it financially.”

The club currently plays at the 40,500-capacity Couto Pereira stadium.

Six stadium projects were initially under consideration by the club’s directors. The proposed new venue would have a retractable roof and – more importantly for the Coritiba fans – have a larger capacity than rival Atlético Paranaense’s 42,000-capacity Arena da Baixada, which was redeveloped for the 2014 Fifa World Cup in the country.
