Probe launched into Kenyan stadium wall collapse

An investigation has been launched after a large section of a stadium in Kenya collapsed on Saturday, injuring one construction worker.

The incident occurred during construction work at the Kakamega Bukhungu Stadium. Media reports in the country quoted local residents, who questioned the quality of the materials being used to renovate the 5,000-capacity venue.

“We are going to commence the investigations on the collapse to find out what is exactly the cause,” Deputy Governor Phillip Kutima said.

“We must stop this work immediately so that we may know what has caused this. The other buildings in this stadium will be checked by the engineer to establish whether the right materials were used in the construction.”

In May, former Kakamega County deputy speaker Cleophas Malala questioned the award of certain contracts for the project. Following the latest incident, Malala said that there is local political pressure to complete the project before next year’s general election.
