Major Wi-Fi upgrade at New England Patriots’ home

Significant upgrades have taken place to the Wi-Fi network at Gillette Stadium, the home of the New England Patriots NFL American football franchise.

The Foxboro facility’s wireless network has been boosted 10-fold in recent weeks, the franchise said.

Fans will now be able to make voice calls over the upgraded Wi-Fi network and will be able to send videos and share photos around the stadium far more easily.

The Wi-Fi network upgrade required 300 per cent more access points in order to deliver so-called ‘Wave 2’ technology.

“What goes into delivering over 1,100 access points, 30 miles of new copper cabling and 10 Gigabit Internet services requires a level of focus, collaboration and cooperation that many don't see from the outside,” said John Burke, director of stadium architecture for sports and entertainment at Extreme, which has supported the upgrade.

The Patriots pioneered Wi-Fi in the NFL by launching the first stadium network, in collaboration with Enterasys Networks, in 2012. New England was also the first NFL franchise to launch a website and mobile application.

“Fans simply want to engage,” Burke added to the Patriots’ official website.

“Fans don't want to have to think about the how. The service simply needs to connect them in a way that feels right.”
