Worker who died at Qatar stadium named, organisers step up safety efforts

Organisers of football’s 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar have said that security has been stepped up at stadium construction sites in light of a work-related death at a venue last month.

The man was yesterday (Wednesday) named as Anil Kumar Pasman from Nepal. He was 29 years old when he died following an incident at Al Wakrah Stadium on October 22.

It was the first work-related death to be announced by Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, which is responsible for delivering the stadia and infrastructure for the event.

The Associated Press news agency reported that the stadium’s contractors have now confirmed that Pasman was hit by a water tanker, whose driver “was tragically unaware of his colleague’s close proximity.”

The Supreme Committee’s secretary general, Hassan Al-Thawadi, said there is “always more to be done” to ensure the best possible health and safety measures are implemented on construction sites.
