Audi takes naming rights to DC United’s new stadium

Major League Soccer franchise DC United has confirmed that its new stadium, scheduled to open in 2018, will be called Audi Field.

DC United has reached an agreement with German automotive manufacturer Audi for naming rights to the 20,000-capacity venue.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the Washington Post newspaper reported that the agreement would be “one of the largest” in MLS, running for at least 12 years.

Under the agreement, Audi’s branding will feature heavily throughout the stadium, with its four-ring logo to adorn the roofs of the east and west stands.

“We are excited to work with DC United and to continue our commitment to soccer in America as well as here in our own backyard,” Loren Angelo, vice-president of marketing at Audi of America, said. “This commitment allows Audi to connect with passionate soccer enthusiasts of all ages and the greater community through unique experiences that further elevate their excitement in America’s fastest growing sport.”

Jason Levien, managing general partner at DC United, added: “We are thrilled to partner with such an incredible brand that is not only recognised in North America, but throughout the world. Audi has transcended the automobile industry and fully embraced the culture of soccer, especially in MLS. We couldn’t think of a better partner to name our stadium and we look forward to forging extraordinary memories for years to come at Audi Field.”

DC United is expected to break ground on the stadium in the near future ahead of its planned opening next year. As well as MLS games, the venue will stage other sporting and cultural events, community activities and concerts.

The state-of-the-art facility will feature 31 luxury suites, a bike valet and 500,000 total square feet of mixed-use retail and residential space on site.
