Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A football club Santos has renewed a Memorandum of Understanding with engineering company WTorre to explore the possibility of a new 30,000-seat stadium for the team.
Representatives from Santos and WTorre met this week to discuss a potential new home for the São Paulo-based club, which currently plays at the 16,000-seat Estádio Vila Belmiro.
Among the topics discussed were the readjustment of costs relating to raw materials and the architectural direction of the stadium, which has been tentatively named ‘Nova Vila Belmiro’.
Santos signed an initial MoU with WTorre in September last year. That agreement was only valid for one year and the latest MoU will see the two parties continue discussions on a potential new stadium.
Santos president Andres Rueda said: “We understand the fans’ anxiety, but the new stadium is a project that will impact the club’s reality for many decades, so we can’t be in a hurry. Since January, we have been able to advance in many important areas and this gives me the certainty that Nova Vila Belmiro will come to fruition. WTorre is the right company to be by our side in this endeavour.”
Luis Davantel, chief financial officer of WTorre, added: “The renewal of the memorandum, made this Tuesday, reinforces our commitment to seeking the best business model for all parties involved in the project: the club, WTorre and the Santos fans. Great advances have been made today and we are committed to delivering a project that matches the greatness of Santos FC.”
WTorre oversaw the construction of Allianz Parque, home of São Paulo-based Palmeiras. The company’s Properties division also operates Allianz Parque, which opened in 2014.
