Tottenham Hotspur plays down stadium fire evacuation

English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur has played down “sensationalist” reports over a fire that led to hundreds of people being evacuated from its stadium on Thursday.

A London Fire Brigade crew attended the stadium on Thursday morning after what the club described as a “small” fire, caused by an air compressor, broke out in one of the kitchens.

London Fire Brigade said in a statement on Thursday that they were called at 10:01 and the fire was under control by 10:59. However, Tottenham explained: “The fire was contained to a very small area and quickly put out with a fire extinguisher by the first person on the scene.”

Some 300 people were evacuated from the 62,800-capacity stadium, including workers and visitors, with the facility soon operational as normal.

The club added: “The building was briefly evacuated as per standard safety procedures following the triggering of the fire alarm system, while a London Fire Brigade crew attended the stadium and carried out a safety inspection before departing the scene.”

Tottenham, who currently lead the Premier League, have welcomed crowds of 58,200 and 57,700 for their two league games so far this season. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium opened in April 2019 with the total cost of the construction project estimated at around £1bn.
