Fans flock to grand opening of US Bank Stadium

Over 150,000 people attended free open days at US Bank Stadium over the weekend following the grand opening of the new state-of-the-art venue on Friday.

The 73,000-capacity, $1.1bn (€1bn) development is the new home of NFL American football franchise the Minnesota Vikings. The team will play its first pre-season game at the stadium against the San Diego Chargers on August 28.

On Saturday morning, fans were flocking to the stadium at a rate of 12,000 an hour. Fans who were registered on the Vikings Rewards programme were also eligible to attend Friday’s ribbon-cutting event.

Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said: “Every year you get excited to go down to training camp (in Mankato) and get ready for a new season. But to sit here today and see this building open up, it just puts that much more excitement getting ready to go down to Mankato next week.”

The first sporting event scheduled to take place at US Bank Stadium is the friendly match between English Premier League football team Chelsea and Italian Serie A side AC Milan on August 3.
