Tesco keen on Olympic Stadium naming rights – report

Supermarket chain Tesco is interested in securing naming rights for London’s Olympic Stadium, according to the Daily Mail.

The UK newspaper said Tesco would step in amid uncertainty surrounding a proposed deal with Indian automotive company Mahindra.

A deal between Mahindra and the London Legacy Development Corporation has been mooted for some time, although the Mail reported that the proposed £6m (€7.1m/$7.9m) agreement is under threat as the period of exclusivity expires in August. Tesco is said to be waiting in the wings should the deal collapse.

English Premier League football club West Ham, which will occupy the stadium from the 2016-17 season, is entitled to half of the annual revenue generated from any naming rights deal above £4m. The club would receive £1m from any deal with Mahindra.

The stadium is currently officially known as the London Stadium while the search for a naming rights partner goes on.

West Ham will play its first fixture at the ground on August 4 against Slovenian side NK Domžale in the Uefa Europa League. Its first Premier League game at the stadium will be against Bournemouth on August 21.
