Sports field designer HG Sports Turf has been appointed to install the playing surface at Perth Stadium, a new multi-purpose arena that is currently under construction in the Australian city.

The company’s turf is used at Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Eden Park stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, and its versatility has been favoured by local officials, who announced the news earlier today (Friday).

Perth Stadium will primarily stage the home games of AFL Aussie rules teams Fremantle and West Coast, but the ground is also set to host cricket matches and other events. In total, 17,000 square metres of turf will be needed.

“A tried and tested solution has been selected accommodating different sporting and entertainment events,” Western Australia Premier Colin Barnett said. “The turf will be a combination of natural grass interwoven with artificial turf and rolled onto the pitch like a carpet, providing outstanding stability and durability.”

The 60,000-capacity stadium is half-finished and construction work is expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2018 AFL season.

The base of the playing surface will be prepared in the near future, with drainage equipment and irrigation systems to be installed to prepare the ground for its new turf.
