Rams official confirms talks ongoing with Chargers over LA move

Kevin Demoff, the chief operating officer of the Los Angeles Rams, has confirmed that the NFL American football franchise is speaking to rival team the San Diego Chargers over the possibility of the latter moving to the Los Angeles.

Voters in San Diego earlier this month overwhelmingly defeated a funding plan for a new downtown NFL stadium in a move that casts a doubt over the future of the Chargers in the city.

The Chargers have a deal in place with the Rams, which moved to Los Angeles from St Louis ahead of the current NFL season, to relocate to the city should a long-term solution to its stadium problem not arise.

The Chargers must decide by January 15 whether or not to take up the option of a move to Los Angeles. Although Chargers owner Dean Spanos said no decision on franchise’s future would be made until the end of the season, talks with the Rams are ongoing.

Demoff told the NFL Network channel: “There are no hurdles to any deal. The relationship between the two owners is in a good place and I believe the Chargers feel welcomed.

“Nothing stands in their way of moving if that is what they want to do. I would also say we have no insight on what their decision will be. It’s only that we have worked hard to make sure their LA option is a good one.”

The Chargers have played at Qualcomm Stadium since 1967 and have been trying to strike a deal for a new venue for over a decade.

The Rams are currently playing at the LA Coliseum and will move into a new facility in the Inglewood area in 2019.
