Rupp Arena boasts world’s largest L-Acoustics K2 system

Rupp Arena, the largest purpose-built basketball venue in the US, is now home to the largest L-Acoustics system ever used as a fixed installation.

The 24,000-capacity arena is home to the University of Kentucky’s Wildcats US college basketball team.

The sound system, which forms part of a $15m (€14.1m/£11.9m) renovation project at the venue, consists of six K2 arrays: two 13-box K2 arrays that cover the east and west sides of the arena, while four 12-box K2 arrays are placed in the corners, with each of the array also featuring four L-Acoustics K1-SB subwoofers.

In addition, 12 ARCS II enclosures have been installed so they hang under a new video scoreboard that has also been placed inside the venue. Another set of six ARCS II will be used as delay speakers for the uppermost six rows of the arena, while 38 ultra-compact 5XT speakers are to be used as under-balcony fills.

A total of 40 LA8 and LA4X amplified controllers will power the new system.

Joe Deavers, installation manager at Loud & Clear, which installed the system, and project manager for the job, said: “The design of the system was intended to be multipurpose; they can lower two of the four corner PA hangs and the side hangs and move them to one end of the venue to create a concert configuration, leaving the other two corner hangs as delays.

“They can also move it into another area of the Lexington Center, such as the convention centre. It’s a highly flexible design and that’s made possible by how flexible and adaptable the K2 system is.”
