AT&T Stadium designer wins Texas Rangers ballpark deal

The company that designed AT&T Stadium, the home of NFL American football franchise the Dallas Cowboys, has been tasked with designing a new ballpark for Major League Baseball team the Texas Rangers.

The team has hired Dallas-based architecture firm HKS to design the venue, which will feature a retractable roof for climate control.

HKS stressed that the roof will not be the signature feature of the facility, with the focus to be on the architectural design instead. “That’s (the roof) the distinguishing feature about other ballparks with a roof,” HKS executive vice-president Bryan Trubey said. “We want to create a project that is something more authentic and intimate.”

The new ballpark will be built next to the Rangers’ current home, Globe Life Park, which HKS was the architect of record for when it opened in 1994.

“Although we love Globe Life Park, there are some things we’d like to take to the new park, like the original architecture,” Trubey added. “But there are also some things we’d like to improve upon.”

The new ballpark will have a capacity of around 42,000, compared to Globe Life Park’s 50,000. The Rangers will also seek to integrate the new facility into the wide-ranging Texas Live! entertainment complex.

It is hoped that work on the new ballpark, which will cost around $1bn (£809m/€945m) will begin before the end of the year after the unveiling of the final design. The stadium is scheduled to be ready in time for the start of the 2020 MLB season.

HKS also designed Miller Park in Milwaukee, the Minnesota Vikings’ state-of-the-art US Bank Stadium and Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts.
