Barclays Center set to end relationship with New York Islanders – report

Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York has opted to end its association with NHL ice hockey franchise the New York Islanders, according to Bloomberg.

The news agency, citing people familiar with the arena’s financial records, reported that the facility no longer considers hosting Islanders games as viable.

Bloomberg’s report added that Russian billionaire Mikhail Prohorov, owner of Barclays Center and the Brooklyn Nets NBA basketball team, which also plays at the arena, has been seeking an investor that will hold a stake in both entities.

Bloomberg’s sources told the agency that a projection shared with potential investors detailed that the Islanders would not contribute any revenue to Barclays Center after the 2018-19 NHL season and as such will cease to play at the arena, which has a capacity of 15,795 for ice hockey games.

The Islanders’ average attendance has been falling since it moved to Barclays Center in 2015 and currently stands at 12,828.

The terms of the Islanders’ agreement with arena operators dictate that the team can leave after the 2017-18 season if it opts to end the partnership itself. Should Barclays Center terminate the contract, the tenancy would come to an end after the 2018-19 campaign.
