Manchester City seeks to make Etihad Stadium bombproof

English Premier League football club Manchester City has begun a new project to make its Etihad Stadium home bombproof.

According to the Daily Mail newspaper, the club has already installed a special film on hundreds of windows on the front of the stadium. The film would prevent the panes of glass from shattering, should an explosion occur at the venue.

The club has also moved to stop motorists from driving outside of the stadium, with both the general public and City employees having to adhere to the new regulations.

Earlier this year, the Premier League contacted all of its 20 clubs to advise of the increased risk of terrorist attacks, following incidents in other countries across Europe. Terrorists have targeted high-profile matches in France and Turkey in the last 18 months.

Manchester United has already taken several steps to strengthen its anti-terrorism efforts, with the appointment of a counter-terrorism chief, the first role if its kind in the Premier League.

United has also installed anti-shatter glass film at its Old Trafford home, while staff carry out matchday checks for bombs underneath cars in club car parks. In addition, all employees are searched every time they enter the stadium.
