Large multi-sport facility to be built in Atlanta

Atlanta Sports City, a $200m (£161m/€189m) multi-sports complex and stadium, is set to be built next to Stonecrest Mall in DeKalb County, it has been confirmed.

The developed 200-acre site in Atlanta, Georgia, will feature a 15,000-seat stadium, 22 football and American football fields, and seven baseball diamonds, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The complex will include a 204,000-square-foot indoor athletic facility and five basketball courts. Many other sports, from martial arts to volleyball, could also use the facilities.

Two professional football teams could move in to the area over the next couple of years, with a men’s team potentially arriving in 2018, and hopes for a women’s team in 2019.

Meanwhile, Atlanta Sports City will provide a venue for large regional football events the metro area currently lacks, said Greg Griffith, executive director of the Georgia Soccer Association.

The sports centre will become the second largest multi-sport facility of its kind in the southeast of the United States. It could potentially draw three million visitors annually, creating $197m in a positive economic impact, according to a study by the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute.

The complex, owned by a company called Atlanta Sports Connection and developed by Atlanta Partners for Development, is also anticipated to create nearly 2,000 permanent jobs.

“This facility will provide a place for dozens of local tournament and give us the ability to bid on major regional and national tournaments,” Griffith said. “The proximity to metro Atlanta and the best airport in the country makes this a great location for a sports complex.”
