German Bundesliga football club Bayern Munich has unveiled a revamp of its Allianz Arena stadium to reflect its status as the sole occupant of the facility.
Bayern had shared the Allianz Arena with 1860 Munich from 2005 until the summer of 2017, when its city rival, which now plays in the regional league system in Germany, moved out to return to its old Grünwalder Stadion.
The revamp will involve a redesign of the stadium bowl, with new seats installed. Deputy chairman Jan-Christian Dreesen presented the facelift plans to Bayern members for the first time at the annual general meeting in November.
Dozens of designs from Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron were deliberated over before a decision was made. Bayern’s club motto ‘mia san mia’ will feature prominently in the new look.
The redesign provides an opportunity for mid-tier season-ticket holders to purchase one of the seats slated for removal.
