Wells Fargo Center goes green with Constellation

Comcast Spectacor, owner of Wells Fargo Center, has partnered with energy company Constellation to introduce a 100 per cent renewable energy supply to the Philadelphia arena.

The long-term commitment is in line with Comcast Spectacor’s expansive $250m redesign of the facility, which is home to NHL ice hockey team the Philadelphia Flyers and NBA basketball franchise the Philadelphia 76ers.

Wells Fargo Center will be powered completely with wind energy and the initiative will greatly reduce the arena’s carbon footprint, Constellation said. Constellation has served as the official energy partner of Wells Fargo Center since 2016.

As part of the initiative, Constellation and Comcast Spectacor will reportedly prevent the emission of more than 14,000 metric tonnes of greenhouse gas annually. Constellation said the plans are also expected to deliver an environmental benefit equivalent to removing almost 4,000 passenger vehicles from the road.

“The Wells Fargo Center is in the midst of an extensive redesign that is transforming all aspects of the complex, and this renewable energy initiative plays an important role,” Dave Scott, chairman and chief executive of Comcast Spectacor, said.

“Through this agreement, we’re increasing the amount of renewable energy in the grid that powers the Wells Fargo Center’s robust live event schedule, and supporting Comcast NBCUniversal’s ongoing commitment to sustainable innovation.”

Constellation has committed to supplying the arena with power from a 9 MW portion of the HillTopper wind project, which was purchased under a separate long-term power purchase agreement with project owner Enel Green Power.

Mark Huston, president of Constellation’s National Retail Business, added: “Constellation congratulates Comcast Spectacor on their progress toward their aspirational sustainability goals.

“We are committed to the development of clean energy solutions and are pleased that, through our CORe product, which is designed to increase access to renewable energy for Commercial and Industrial customers, and collaboration with Enel Green Power, we are able to help Comcast Spectacor sustainably power the Wells Fargo Center and contribute to development of the Hilltopper wind project.”

The next phase of the redesign of Wells Fargo Center is a new mezzanine level, which is set to be completed in the autumn. The mezzanine level will accommodate about 40 per cent of the facility’s total capacity.
