WWE downgrades Saudi event to smaller venue

US wrestling organisation WWE has opted to relocate its ’Crown Jewel’ event in Saudi Arabia from the King Fahd International Stadium to the smaller King Saud University Stadium.

WWE Crown Jewel had been due to take place on November 2 at the 67,000-capacity King Fahd International Stadium in the Saudi capital of Riyadh.

However, while the event will remain in the country’s capital and run on the same day, it will instead take place at the 20,000-seat university venue.

The WWE did not disclose the reasons behind the decision, but did release an official statement that said: “General Sports Authority of Saudi Arabia Chairman His Excellency Turki Al Sheikh, WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, invite the world to celebrate this signature event.

“Following the sold-out Greatest Royal Rumble in April, this is the second event as part of a long-term partnership between WWE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

A WWE Championship match between AJ Styles vs. Daniel Bryan will headline the WWE Crown Jewel event next month.

Fans will also see a Triple Threat match featuring Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar and Braun Strowman, as well as the first-ever WWE World Cup tournament to determine the best wrestler in the world.

Ticket availability for the Saudi event will be announced in the coming weeks.
