Telefónica steps up support of Wanda Metropolitano

Telecommunications company Telefónica is to continue providing technology services at the Wanda Metropolitano through a wide-ranging strategic partnership with the stadium’s tenant, LaLiga football club Atlético de Madrid.

The four-season deal, announced today (Tuesday), names Telefónica as Atlético’s official technology provider, while it will also sponsor the club’s men’s and women’s teams.

The Wanda Metropolitano opened in 2017 and has a capacity of 68,000. It replaced the Estadio Vicente Calderón as Atlético’s home ground. The partnership with Telefónica is designed to further enhance the fan experience at the new stadium.

Atlético first partnered with Telefónica when the Wanda Metropolitano opened. The stadium has since been fitted with 6,700 separate network connections, along with 900 remotely-operated TVs and a 360-degree ribbon LED board.

Emilio Gayo, president of Telefónica España, said: “The first thing we did together was to equip the stadium with state-of-the-art technological infrastructures such as the ‘360 ribbon board’. The sporting facilities have been praised by the fans and other clubs. These good results have encouraged us to take another step in our partnership.”

Atlético said the Wanda Metropolitano is the first smart stadium in Europe due to its communications and security networks.
