Leipzig’s Red Bull Arena capacity to reach 48,000

German Bundesliga football club RB Leipzig is set to increase the overall capacity of the Red Bull Arena by 5,000, ensuring the stadium will be able to seat up to 48,000 fans.

The Leipziger Volkszeitung newspaper reports that the first stage of the construction process will begin at the end of the current season and take two and a half years to complete.

The stadium’s hospitality areas are also set to be modernised and the total price of the construction work is expected to come to €50m (£43m/$56m). The stadium is already set to receive a new sound system and floodlights in the summer.

Red Bull Arena has the capacity to expand to 57,000 seats. The club had originally planned to expand the 42,558-capacity stadium to 52,000 seats in time for the 2020-21 season but opted to postpone this expansion back in October.

Red Bull Arena will be one of the host stadia when Germany stages the UEFA European Championships in 2024.
