Stampede at Madagascar stadium leaves many dead

At least 15 people have died following a stampede at the Mahamasina Municipal Stadium in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

The stadium was hosting independence day celebrations, with president Andry Rajoelina having attended earlier in the day. The BBC reported that the crush occurred as people attempted to leave the stadium following a parade.

It is the second crush to have occurred at the stadium within the past year. Last September, one person died following a crush at the stadium ahead of a Madagascar vs Senegal Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The crush occurred before the match, which still went ahead and finished 2-2. Madagascar was subsequently banned from using the stadium for three months and/or three matches played by the national stadium.

The latest tragedy also caused around 80 injuries, according to the Associated Press news agency.
